Rocks in the City
You can find many different rock types in our cities. Here are some of the common ones.
Serpentenite - a green metamorphic rock.
Granite - a coarse grained igneous rock.
Many varieties are used:-
Virgo
- a deep red granite
"Baltic
Brown" - an orbicular granite with rounded crystals of feldspar. Often
used on TSB banks (now part of the Lloyds-TSB Group).
Portland Stone - a fossiliferous limestone, after it has weathered a bit the oysters stand out from the surface. It is often used for important civic buildings, memorials and for war graves (though I have noticed a grey granite is now being used to replace it).
Oolitic Limestone - resembling fish eggs. This is a picture of Ancaster Stone, which has a "streaky bacon" appearance.
Travertine - a soft limestone. Often used on Macdonalds. The natural holes in the rock have been filled.
Larvikite - a coarse grained igneous rock from Norway, which shows beautiful blue Schiller effect in the feldspars. Often used on Marks and Spencer Shops.
