Geology in the Graveyard

Graveyards and Cemeteries are good places to go to see rocks. We can see a variety of exotic rocks used as gravestones. Also because the stones are dated we can study the effects of weathering on the different types of rock.

Weathering on a Sandstone gravestone: layers of the rock are peeling off.

This Sandstone gravestone is so badly weathered that you cannot read the inscription after 100 years.

A Victorian "draped urn" monument.

I like the purple welsh slate used for this gravestone. It has weathered well and the beautiful carving is still preserved well.

Some Granites and Gneisses that you may find used as gravestones.

Many of these pictures are taken in Spring Bank Cemetery, Hull, East Yorkshire, UK.
